Gamma-linolenic acid is an
essential polyunsaturated fatty acid. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA's)
perform diverse biochemistry in most of the cells in our bodies. One group of
PUFA's, the omega 6 fatty acids, play a role in the modulation of membrane
structure and the formation of prostaglandins. They also control the water
impermeability of our skin and possibly the gastro-intestinal tract coupled with
the regulation of cholesterol transport and synthesis.
High GLA supplementation may be of use when there is a requirement for higher
levels of gamma linolenic acid. One capsule of High GLA (sourced from borage/starflower oil) contains nearly three times as much GLA
as that found in an equivalent supplement containing evening primrose oil only.
High GLA is an ideal supplement where a high GLA intake is required, for
example, during periods of rapid growth or when the diet is high in saturated
fatty acids.
