The Hand of Buddha has been a
powerful symbol of the
presence and teachings of the Buddha throughout Asia. Contemplating such figures
is an exercise in meditation, in effect a visual mantra. This hand
shows the finger position (mudra) known as the teaching gesture, with the
thumb and index finger forming the Wheel of Law. The symbol in the palm is of the
Lotus Flower, symbol of Purity.
In Buddhist iconography, all hand
gestures or mudras have a meaning. Mudra
movements mirror the movements of the mind, and are one of the main symbolic
means of conveying the principles of the dharma (protection). One of the most common is the mudra of teaching, in which the fine discriminative insight of the Buddhist way
is portrayed by the joining of the thumb and index finger, a circularity also
recalling the Wheel of the Law and the eternal continuation of the dharma.
Buddha means "one who is
intuitive, awakened, or enlightened".
